The Ural Plant of Deicing Materials (UZPM), a leading Russian manufacturer of modern anti-ice products under the Bionord brand, has supplied two types of multi-component agents to maintain the street and road network of the capital of the Republic of Crimea.
This season, to ensure the safety on the roadways and pedestrian routes of Simferopol, the multi-component material Bionord Universal will be deployed, which remains functional at temperatures down to –30°C. Additionally, the combined Bionord Pavements agent, based on mineral salts and marble chips, will be used to create an instant anti-slip effect immediately upon distribution across the treated surface.
In Simferopol, Bionord has been applied for more than three seasons. Its effectiveness has been proven during both scheduled and emergency cleaning of the city infrastructure. The specific climate of the region marked by abrupt temperature transitions through the freezing point, high humidity, and frequent changes in precipitation types presents a constant threat of ice formation. Under these conditions, traditional sand-salt mixes are highly ineffective: they fail to solve the problem of slippery roads, are rapidly washed away by precipitation, and the insoluble sand component clogs storm water sewerage. In spring, this results in dirt build-up and tremendous amounts of dust. Furthermore, sand-salt residue left on the asphalt can increase vehicle braking distances, creating a hazardous ‘roller effect’ on the roadway.
Unlike outdated mixes, modern Bionord materials are manufactured in compliance with GOST R 58427-2020 and hold a full package of authorizations and approvals, including a positive state environmental appraisal by Rosprirodnadzor (Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources Use). The production is carried out using the ‘Single Granule’ technology, which ensures uniform distribution of active components. Each granule contains a precisely balanced ratio of substances, guaranteeing consistent performance across the entire treated area. At the same time, the consumption rate of the deicing agent is on average seven times lower than that of a conventional sand and salt mix, while its almost 100% solubility prevents the buildup of dirt and dust completely. Owing to optimized shape and mass, the granules are securely fixed on the road surface, ensuring uniform ice melting within 20 minutes. The prolonged action of the composition saves time and resources required for city winter maintenance. Furthermore, Bionord features low corrosivity and is safe for concrete structures and asphalt-concrete pavements.
UZPM deicing materials have been on the market for over 19 years and are applied in more than 50 regions of Russia. The efficiency and high quality of Bionord are proven by industry awards, including ‘100 Best Goods of Russia’, ‘Russian Quality’, and ‘Best ESG Projects in Russia’. The products are used for the maintenance of federal highways, airports, city streets, cultural heritage sites, and the country’s major resorts.
